A concussion happens when a force causes the brain to rapidly move back and forth inside the skull. This may be caused by either a direct blow or by a blow to the body that forces the head to quickly rotate.

Neuropsychological assessment is a key component within a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to assessment of sport-related concussion (SRC).

A comprehensive neuropsychological assessment should not only include neurocognitive testing but also incorporate symptom inventories, vestibular-ocular screening, and a psychological evaluation. Neuropsychological assessments are most effective when completed by a Consultant Neuropsychologist, given their specialised training in test interpretation and ability to holistically analyse and corroborate  the psychological, cognitive, behavioral, physiologic, as well as neurologic principals when treating SRC.
