Neuropsychology is the discipline which investigates the relations between brain mechanisms and processes on the one hand and cognition and behavioural control on the other.
The foundations for Neuropsychology were formed in the 19th Century with the search at the time for systematic relations between brain lesions and the loss of certain mental abilities .
In the 1960’s, the foundation of the scientific journal, Neuropsychologia, formally established the term, Neuropsychology as an autonomous field of scientific enquiry .
Since then, the evolution of Neuropsychology has progressed through the refinement of the anatomo – clinical approach in brain- injured patients and the development of research and experiments aimed at establishing correlations between mental performances and brain organisations.
More recently, progress in both clinical and experimental Neuropsychology has been accelerated by new technologies for analysing brain lesions in vivo .
The current and future evolution of Neuropsychology will be formulated by, scientific, medical and technological developments and the correlation of real-world experiences from patients .
Neuropsychological tests and test batteries will continue to evolve and improve.
